UPDATED: Congratulations to the following 5 winners of the Wings of Dawn art block from Studio JRU! The winners were randomly chosen using random.org and have be emailed with further instructions!
The very first item I ever ordered from DaySpring was a beautiful block art piece that quoted Joshua 24:15. I loved the artwork from the moment I first saw it.
Jennifer is the artist behind Studio JRU, and the talent behind my first DaySpring order. She makes exclusive designs for (in)courage. In fact, Jennifer’s crosses are featured in this month’s (in)spired deals! Jennifer lives in Nebraska, just like me. And Nebraska is where God works through Jennifer to create beautifully stunning designs.
I caught up with Jennifer and we chatted about her life on the farm, the source of her inspiration, and the life of an artist.
I don’t think there was a specific moment that I knew. It was just me. I think when you are following the path He made for you, you just know in your heart you are doing what you are meant to do. When God puts something in your heart, you have to follow!
Your parents encouraged your artwork when you were a little girl. What advice would you give to anyone who wants to encourage a child’s creativity?
I know I have been blessed to have parents who did everything they could to support my creativity. Creativity is so personal, it can be easy to crush the feelings and dreams of a young one. Be positive. Let them create. Let them make that mess. Do not be critical. Do not judge. And do what you can to help them grow. This encouragement supports confidence and belief.
There is nothing like a big open blue sky. Cropland… miles and miles of green fields in the summer and golden in the fall. I love how the sky lights up during a thunderstorm. Bright stars at night because there are no city lights to compete with. A sunrise that feels like there is nothing between you and the sun. Sunsets that make everything glow. We are able to see the colors change with the seasons. We are surrounded by endless miles of Gods’ beauty and every color imaginable. Nebraska is truly beautiful.
I have to admit, the life of an artist sounds pretty romantic. What is a typical day like for you?
I have to laugh… when I think about my typical day, romantic does not come to mind. I have errand days, paint days and computer days. Errand days include going to the post office or to FedEx for shipping and then picking up any supplies I may need. Paint days are obviously my fun messy days. Prep work, painting and finishing work. Computer days I work on product photos, my blog, edit photos, listings and the business-y paperwork sorts of things.
Where do you look for inspiration for your art?
I don’t feel like I am really looking for it… it seems to come to me. I feel I am very aware of things. I am constantly jotting down notes of inspiration. It may be color combinations or it could be words. I may be listening to the radio and hear words that are beautiful. If I hear or see bible verses I like, I jot them down to look up later. Reading books and looking through magazines are always inspiring.
What was it like the very first time that you sold a piece of your artwork?
I was so nervous to do my first show. I am so grateful for my husband who was with me, and for my parents who came to the show. It was a local craft show. I had no idea if people would like what I made… let alone pay for it! Seeing how people reacted was wonderful. Talking to strangers about my work turned out to be a great experience. People can really be so kind. After that first show I thought… maybe this IS something I can do.
Can you tell us about the new pieces you’re working on for (in)courage?
I have 4 new block designs… using some wonderful words from a few of the (in)courage girls as inspiration. I also have 2 new crosses designed.
One of the things I appreciate most about blogging and social media is the way that God keeps showing up all over the internet! Your blog is one of the places where God really gets a place to shine. What is the main message you want people to take away from a visit to your blog?
I want people to feel at home. Like they are my good friend, sitting with me on the couch, having heartfelt conversations and having laughs. I want them to feel God’s love and grace and goodness through me. I want them to leave with a warm heart and a smile.
This month, the crosses Jennifer designed for DaySpring are $10 off. Now, you can use these crosses in your home as a reminder of the gift of grace this Easter.
DaySpring is giving away five (yes, FIVE!) beautiful Wings of Dawn decorative art blocks. For your chance to win, just leave us a comment telling us about a time you followed a dream that God put in your heart.
And, if you’re wondering who took those beautiful pictures of Nebraska? Yep. That was Jennifer! She rocks!Leave a Comment
